From Steel City to Surf City

Wollongong (Dharawal: "wol-lan-gong" — sound of the sea) was built on coal and steel. BHP's Port Kembla Steelworks employed 20,000+ at its peak. The city reinvented itself through the university and is now one of Australia's best lifestyle cities.

    The Steel Era

BHP opened Port Kembla Steelworks in 1928. It became one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, employing 20,000+ workers and driving massive post-WWII immigration from Italy, Greece, Macedonia, and Croatia.

The Mount Kembla Mine disaster (1902) killed 96 men and boys — one of Australia's worst mining tragedies. BlueScope Steel still operates at Port Kembla today.

    The Reinvention

The University of Wollongong (30,000 students, top 1% globally) drove the economic pivot from the 1990s. The Innovation Campus opened on former BHP research land in 2008.

Today Wollongong markets itself as an alternative to expensive Sydney — 80km south but a world apart in lifestyle and affordability.
