Seven Miles from Sydney, A Thousand Miles from Care

Gayamaygal and Garigal country. Governor Arthur Phillip named this place in 1788 — just 5 days after arriving at Botany Bay — impressed by the "confidence and manly behaviour" of the Aboriginal men he met on the beach. One of the oldest European place names in Australia.

    Surf & History

The first World Surfing Championship was held at Manly Beach in May 1964. Australian Midget Farrelly won the men's title — the first world surfing champion. The Manly Surf Bathing Association formed in 1903, defying the pre-dawn bathing laws.

Henry Gilbert Smith, the "Father of Manly," developed the area from the 1850s. He built the first pier (1855) and coined the famous slogan.

    The Quarantine Station

North Head Quarantine Station operated for 152 years (1832-1984). Over 13,000 people passed through, quarantined for smallpox, cholera, plague, typhoid, and Spanish Flu.

Now Q Station — a boutique hotel. The ghost tours are one of Sydney's most popular tourist activities. Over 500 people died there. Inscriptions carved by quarantined passengers are still visible in the sandstone.
