PNC Park opened on March 31, 2001, replacing Three Rivers Stadium which had served the Pirates and Steelers since 1970. Built at a cost of approximately $216 million, the ballpark was designed by HOK Sport (now Populous) to evoke the classic feel of Forbes Field, Pittsburgh's beloved pre-Three Rivers home.
The stadium sits on the North Shore of the Allegheny River, directly across from downtown Pittsburgh, giving it one of the most spectacular backdrops in all of professional sports. The open outfield concourse frames the downtown skyline, the Roberto Clemente Bridge, and the confluence of Pittsburgh's three rivers — the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio.
With a capacity of 38,747, PNC Park is one of the smallest stadiums in Major League Baseball, which contributes to its intimate atmosphere. The exterior is clad in limestone and steel, with two signature rotundas — one behind home plate and one behind the left-field foul pole — featuring exposed spiral walkways that have become architectural icons. The Highmark Riverwalk along the Allegheny River connects the ballpark to neighboring attractions and features oversized baseball sculptures and the retired numbers of Pirates legends including Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Honus Wagner, and Bill Mazeroski.
PNC Park has 18 men's restrooms and 20 women's restrooms spread across the Main Concourse (100 Level) and Upper Concourse (300 Level), plus the Suite Level. All restrooms have child-size changing tables. The open concourses mean you're never far from facilities, and the lower-level concourse is open to the field so you can still catch the action while moving between sections.
All restrooms at PNC Park are wheelchair accessible. Elevators are located at the Home Plate Rotunda and the Left Field Rotunda for access between levels. For assistance, visit Guest Relations at the bottom of the Home Plate Rotunda or contact the Pirates accessibility line.
13 dedicated family/companion care restrooms across the ballpark: Sections 109, 110, 112 (Crow's Nest with adult changing table), 115, 119, 132, 133, 147 (Main Concourse), 305, 315, 331 (Upper Concourse), Suite Level (outside Suite 14), plus club-level locations. All have changing tables and are ADA accessible.
Restrooms are accessible as soon as you enter the stadium. Gates typically open 90 minutes before first pitch. The Riverwalk outside the ballpark is open to the public on non-game days. On game days, the Riverwalk opens to ticket holders 30 minutes before gates.

Walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge from downtown — it closes to vehicle traffic 90 minutes before first pitch and the walk across with PNC Park and the skyline ahead of you is one of the best arrivals in all of professional sports.
Park downtown where street parking is cheaper and garages run $10-15 instead of $25-75 on the North Shore, then walk across the bridge or ride the free T light rail to North Side station. You save money and get a better experience.
The Upper Concourse (300 Level) restrooms are noticeably less crowded than the Main Concourse, especially during the 5th and 7th innings. If lines are long below, take the elevator or ramp up.
Sit on the third-base side or in right-field bleachers (Sections 135-143) for the best views of the Pittsburgh skyline and Roberto Clemente Bridge. These are also among the most affordable seats in the park.
Arrive early and walk the Highmark Riverwalk along the Allegheny River before the game. It features oversized baseball sculptures, retired numbers, and Negro Leagues history — and it opens to ticket holders 30 minutes before gates.
Federal Street across from the ballpark has multiple restaurants and bars — North Shore Tavern, SoHo, and Mike's Beer Bar are all directly across the street and great for pre-game or post-game without fighting the concourse crowds.
All concourses and restrooms are open. Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch. The Roberto Clemente Bridge closes to vehicle traffic 90 minutes before first pitch, creating a pedestrian-only walkway from downtown. PNC Park is completely cashless — bring a credit card, debit card, or use mobile payment. The Great Pierogi Race runs in the middle of the 5th inning. The Riverwalk opens to ticket holders 30 minutes before gates.
Concert configurations vary by artist and stage setup. Most Main Concourse and Upper Concourse restrooms remain open. Some premium-level areas may be restricted depending on the event layout. The Roberto Clemente Bridge may or may not close to traffic for non-baseball events — check event details.

The smartest move is parking downtown for $10-20 and walking across the Roberto Clemente Bridge — the bridge closes to traffic on game days and the walk is one of the best parts of the PNC Park experience. Alternatively, take the free T light rail from any downtown station to North Side station, which is a 5-minute walk to the ballpark.
