Las Vegas airport began in 1942 as a U.S. Army Air Corps training facility. After World War II, Clark County took over and opened it to commercial aviation. The airport was named McCarran International Airport in 1948 after Nevada Senator Pat McCarran. It was renamed Harry Reid International Airport on December 14, 2021, honoring the late Senate Majority Leader.
Terminal 1 dates from the 1960s-80s with three gate concourses (A, B, C). Terminal 3 opened in 2012 with modern amenities and the D and E gates. Concourse D is uniquely positioned between both terminals, accessible from either via tram. The airport is famous for its slot machines in the gate areas — Vegas starts the moment you land. LAS is just 1 mile from the southern end of the Strip, making it one of the closest major airports to its city's main attraction.
