Northwest Stadium opened on September 14, 1997 as Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, built by the team's then-owner at a cost of $250.5 million — at the time the most expensive NFL stadium ever built, entirely privately funded. It was renamed FedExField in 1999 when FedEx acquired the naming rights.
The stadium underwent multiple capacity changes — originally 80,000 seats, it expanded to over 91,000 at its peak, making it the largest NFL stadium. Capacity has since been reduced to approximately 58,000 after the removal of upper deck seating and the addition of luxury suites and club areas.
In 2023, the naming rights changed to Northwest Stadium. The venue sits in Landover, Maryland, about 2.5 miles east of Washington, D.C. The Commanders have announced plans for a new stadium, with several D.C.-area sites under consideration. The current stadium has five levels: Lower Level, Club Level, Upper Level, and Lower and Upper Suite Levels.
Northwest Stadium has three main gates, three hours of early access for Legends Plaza and Merrill Touchdown Club ticket holders, and general gates opening two hours before kickoff.

Northwest Stadium is surrounded mostly by office parks and residences, not a walkable entertainment district. Plan your pre-game dining in Washington, D.C. or at the Woodmore Town Centre off Landover Road before heading to the stadium.
The Redzone parking lot off Sheriff Road opens earliest for tailgating. The Gray Lot is cash-only, cannot be pre-purchased, and sells out 2-3 hours before game time.

The Upper Concourse (400 Level) restrooms tend to be less crowded than the Main Concourse. The Upper Concourse sections 401-454 have general seating with decent views despite being far from the field.
Metro service to the stadium is limited. The Morgan Boulevard Metro station (Blue/Silver Line) is the closest but still requires a 15-20 minute walk. Driving and parking is the most common approach.
SeatGeek Legends Plaza and the Merrill Touchdown Club gates open 3 hours before kickoff — one hour earlier than general gates. If you have premium tickets, use this extra hour to explore and use restrooms before the crowds arrive.
