Tropicana Field opened on March 3, 1990, as the Florida Suncoast Dome, becoming one of the first domed stadiums built without a tenant team. It was renamed the ThunderDome in 1993 and Tropicana Field in 1996 when Tropicana Products acquired the naming rights. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now Rays) finally moved in for the 1998 MLB season.
The stadium's signature feature is its tilted, sloped dome — a cable-supported roof that makes it one of the most distinctive silhouettes in American sports. It seats approximately 25,000 fans in its current reduced configuration (originally 43,772 for baseball).
In October 2024, Hurricane Milton devastated the stadium, shredding the roof fabric, allowing months of rain to pour through, spreading mold, and destroying electrical systems. The Rays played the entire 2025 season at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The stadium was rebuilt at a cost approaching $60 million, with upgrades including new artificial turf, renovated luxury suites, an upgraded video board, new home plate club seating, refreshed clubhouses, and a new sound system. The Rays returned on April 7, 2026, beating the Cubs 6-4 in front of a sellout crowd of 25,114.
The Rays are leased to play at Tropicana Field through 2028, with the new ownership pursuing a new ballpark in the Tampa area.
Tropicana Field has a total of 56 restrooms spread throughout the facility across the Lower Level and Upper Level. The stadium features men's, women's, and all-gender restrooms on every level, plus family restrooms and a private nursing room. Diaper changing tables are in all men's and women's restrooms.

Family restrooms on the Lower Level are located between Sections 102-104, 116-118, and 119-121. All-gender restrooms are at Sections 106, 126 (Lower Level) and Sections 206, 214 (Upper Level). A private nursing room is available at the Orlando Health Fan Care Clinic behind home plate (keypad code: 33705).
Restrooms are accessible once inside the stadium. Gates typically open 90 minutes before first pitch. Outside, the nearest restrooms are at Ferg's Sports Bar and restaurants along 1st Street South and Central Avenue.
