Orlando International Airport began as McCoy Air Force Base, a Strategic Air Command installation active during the Cold War. After the base closed in 1975, Orlando converted it to a civilian airport — which is why the airport code is MCO (from McCoy). The first commercial terminal opened in 1981.
MCO was designed with a unique 'hub and spoke' model: two main terminal buildings (A and B) serve as check-in and baggage claim hubs, connected by automated people movers to four airside concourses with gates. Terminal C, a $2.8 billion expansion, opened on September 19, 2022, adding 15 new gates with state-of-the-art facilities. Terminal C is also home to the Brightline high-speed rail station, providing direct service to Miami and South Florida in 3.5 hours. MCO is the primary gateway for Central Florida's 75+ million annual tourists.

The Brightline high-speed rail station is in Terminal C — direct service to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Trains are pet-friendly and have onboard restrooms. No car rental needed for the South Florida connection.
