Wye River is one of the Great Ocean Road's quietest beach hamlets — a hidden cove between Lorne and Apollo Bay with about 70 permanent residents. Rebuilt with remarkable community spirit after the devastating 2015 Christmas Day bushfire that destroyed over half its homes. A peaceful beach, gentle surf, and zero crowds.

Wye River and neighbouring Separation Creek share three toilet options. The beach block is your main facility.
Wye River Beach Toilets
Main toilet block at the beach car park. The primary facility for the whole village.
Located right at the beach car park where the Great Ocean Road meets the village. Maintained by Colac Otway Shire. Basic but clean. This is where most visitors will stop — it's the obvious toilet for anyone pulling off the GOR.
Paddy's Path Track Toilet
Basic facility along the coastal walking track connecting Wye River to Separation Creek.
Paddy's Path is a lovely 1.5km coastal walk between Wye River and Separation Creek. There's a basic toilet along the route. The path offers views over the coast and through regenerating bush from the 2015 fire.
Separation Creek Toilets
Small public toilet at the beach access in neighbouring Separation Creek.
Separation Creek is Wye River's even tinier neighbour (about 30 houses). It has a small toilet block near the beach access. You can drive here (1.5km north) or walk via Paddy's Path. Also fire-rebuilt since 2015.
On Christmas Day 2015, Wye River and Separation Creek were devastated by bushfire. The community has rebuilt — here's what to know.
Wye River is about slowing down. One of the GOR's quietest beaches, gentle surf, and bushwalking through regenerating forest. No crowds, no fuss.

Sheltered cove with gentle waves. One of the calmest GOR beaches — popular with families. Unpatrolled but usually safe. River mouth area for kids.
1.5km coastal walk to Separation Creek. Ocean views, regenerating bush, and birdlife. Easy grade. Toilet facilities along the track.
Neighbouring Kennett River (5 min south) has Australia's best wild koala sightings. Drive down for a morning walk on Grey River Road.
The beach break at Wye River is gentle enough for learning. Small waves most days. No surf school on site — bring your own board.
Rock fishing from the headlands or beach fishing for salmon. The river mouth produces bream. Quiet spots away from other anglers.
See how the Australian bush recovers. New growth from epicormic buds, understory regrowth. Nature's resilience on display.
Southern right whales and humpbacks pass close to shore during migration. Watch from the headlands or beach. Free and spectacular.
Wye River's biggest attraction is doing nothing. Read a book on the beach. Watch the sunset. Listen to the waves. That's the whole point.
Wye River has holiday houses and a small caravan park. For more options, try Lorne (12 min) or Apollo Bay (25 min).

Cabins and powered sites right on the foreshore. The main accommodation in the village. Book well ahead for summer holidays — it sells out months in advance. Has its own amenities block.
Nearest dunny: On-site amenities block + beach toilets (2 min walk).
Rebuilt holiday homes available on Airbnb and Stayz. Many are architecturally striking — rebuilt to modern bushfire standards with big windows and ocean views.
Nearest dunny: Beach toilet block (within 5 min walk of most).
Full range of hotels, motels, and restaurants. Much more infrastructure than Wye River. Easy drive down for a quiet beach day without the crowds.
Nearest dunny: Lorne facilities (multiple locations).
2 hours 20 minutes via M1 to Geelong, then Great Ocean Road through Torquay, Anglesea, and Lorne.
Easy to miss — watch for the small sign. The turn-off into the village is sharp.
From Lorne: No toilets on the 15km stretch between Lorne and Wye River. Use Lorne foreshore before departing.
Heading south: Kennett River beach toilet is 5 minutes further south. Then nothing until Apollo Bay (25 min).
Wye River is calmer than most GOR beaches but still demands respect. Unpatrolled year-round.
The cove is sheltered by headlands — usually calmer than open coast. No lifeguards. Swim near the shore. The river mouth area is shallow for kids. Check conditions before entering.
Even sheltered coves can have rips after storms or large swells. If caught in a current, swim parallel to shore — never fight it directly. Float and signal if exhausted.
No lifeguards, limited mobile reception in some spots. Emergency Triple Zero (000) still works. Nearest ambulance from Lorne or Apollo Bay — 15-20 min response.
A year-round destination but the vibe changes dramatically with the seasons.
| Season | Weather | Crowds | Best For | Toilets |
