Geelong — From Wool Capital to Waterfront City

Geelong (Djilang in Wadawurrung language) has reinvented itself from an industrial powerhouse to one of Australia's fastest-growing cities. Here's the story behind the city where you're looking for a dunny.

    The Wool & Ford Era

Geelong was the wool capital of the world — massive bluestone woolstores lined the port, shipping fleece across the globe. The 1872 woolstore that now houses the National Wool Museum is a surviving example.

In 1925, the first Australian-assembled Ford Model T rolled off the line in a rented Geelong woolstore. Ford operated here for 91 years until closure in October 2016, taking thousands of jobs with it.

    The Reinvention

After Ford and Alcoa closed, Geelong pivoted hard. The derelict woolstores became Deakin University's Waterfront Campus. The waterfront itself transformed into the bollard-studded promenade you see today.

Fun fact: the Geelong Ring Road rest areas were designed by BKK Architects and are award-winning civic buildings — proving that even dunnies can be good architecture. Solar-powered, flushed with collected stormwater.
