The Eureka Stockade — Where Australian Democracy Was Born

On 3 December 1854, gold miners rebelled against an unjust 30-shilling mining licence and police brutality. 27 were killed. 13 were tried for high treason — and all 13 were acquitted. The rebellion led directly to universal male suffrage in Victoria.

    The Story

Peter Lalor led the miners. Raffaello Carboni documented it. Henry Ross carried the Southern Cross flag. They built a rough stockade from pit props and overturned carts — and 300 government troops attacked at dawn.

The original Eureka Flag — blue with a white Southern Cross — is held by the Art Gallery of Ballarat (on loan to the Eureka Centre). It's one of Australia's most powerful symbols.
