    The Town the Telegraph Built

Arrernte country — Mparntwe. Alice Springs exists because of a telegraph wire. In 1872, the Overland Telegraph Line (3,200km, Adelaide to Darwin) needed a relay station beside a permanent waterhole. The spring was named after Alice Todd, wife of Sir Charles Todd. The town followed.

    Arrernte Dreaming

The Caterpillar Dreaming (Yeperenye) — giant caterpillar ancestors travelled across the land, their bodies forming the MacDonnell Ranges. Simpsons Gap is where a goanna ancestor rests. Emily Gap has ancient rock paintings. Heavitree Gap, where the highway enters town, was formed by Dreaming ancestors.

The Arrernte have inhabited Mparntwe for at least 30,000-40,000 years.
