Local knowledge that will make your Derby Day — or any race day — significantly better.
Gates open early on Derby Day. Arrive by 8am to avoid the worst crowds. 170,000 people means long security lines, packed parking, and hours of waiting if you arrive late. The undercard races start mid-morning and are part of the experience.
Avoid restrooms in the 15 minutes before the Kentucky Derby post time — everyone goes at once. Use the Grandstand 2nd floor instead of the Infield. Plan visits during undercard races when lines are shorter.
Churchill Downs offers a premium gold-cup Mint Julep (proceeds to charity). The standard julep is available everywhere for a normal price. Either way, you must have at least one — it's the law of the land.
Hats and sundresses for women, seersucker and sport coats for men — especially in premium areas. The Infield is more casual. Wear comfortable shoes — you will walk miles, and the Infield is grass that can be muddy.
Derby Day is the first Saturday of May. Louisville is often sunny and warm. The Infield and Grandstand upper levels have limited shade. Sunscreen, a hat, and water are critical. Dehydration + bourbon is a losing combination.
Download the official Churchill Downs app for the Wayfinding tool, which provides real-time directions to restrooms, concessions, and gates. Also use it for mobile betting and race results.
Betting windows have enormous lines before the Kentucky Derby. Place your Derby bet early in the day — or use the mobile app. Bet the undercard races for fun and skip the crush entirely.
Free parking + free shuttles from the Kentucky Exposition Center during Derby Week. Skip the $40 parking, the neighborhood traffic, and the frustration. ADA shuttles available. This is the local's secret.
The Friday before the Derby (Kentucky Oaks) is considered by many Louisville locals to be the better experience — smaller crowds, great racing, and a more relaxed atmosphere. The "Lilies for the Fillies" tradition makes it special.
Louisville in May can hit 85°F+. The combination of all-day sun exposure, walking, and bourbon catches people off guard. Drink a full water bottle before your first julep. Free water stations are on every concourse level and any concession stand will give you a free cup of water.
First Aid is on the Clubhouse 1st floor (next to the nursing room) and Grandstand 1st floor near the Paddock Gate. On Oaks and Derby days, an additional First Aid trailer operates in the Infield. EMTs patrol all areas on major race days. Don't tough it out — heat-related illness is the #1 medical issue on Derby Day.
Churchill Downs enforces a clear bag policy on major race days. Bags must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and no larger than 12" x 6" x 12". Small clutch purses (4.5" x 6.5") are allowed. Non-clear bags will be turned away at the gate.
When to expect crowds, when to find shorter lines, and how to time your visit for the best experience.
First Saturday of May. Up to 170,000 fans. Gates open early morning, with the crowd building steadily from 8am. Security lines are longest 10am-1pm. Restroom lines peak 15 minutes before the Derby post time (~6:50pm ET). The Infield is standing-room chaos by mid-afternoon.
100,000+ fans on the Friday before Derby. Considered the local's favorite day. Lines are shorter than Saturday but still significant. Restrooms are busy from noon onward. Arrive by 10am for a comfortable experience.
Major stakes races (Stephen Foster, Spinster) draw 15,000-30,000. Far more manageable than Derby Week. Restroom lines rarely exceed 5 minutes. Parking is available on-site. A great way to experience Churchill Downs without the crush.
Weekday and non-stakes races draw 5,000-15,000. Short to no lines everywhere. On-site parking available. Restrooms are nearly empty. The best time to explore the venue and enjoy racing without the crowd stress.
On Derby Day: during undercard races (mid-morning to early afternoon). On regular race days: between the 2nd and 5th races when crowds are thinnest. Always use Grandstand 2nd floor over the Infield. Clubhouse restrooms are less trafficked than Grandstand 1st floor.
Spring Meet: Late April through early July. Fall Meet: Late September through late November. Derby Week: Tuesday through Saturday of the first week of May. Breeders' Cup: When hosted (check schedule). Twilight Thursday racing offers a relaxed evening atmosphere.
Staying hydrated at Churchill Downs is critical, especially on sunny race days when bourbon flows freely.
Water fountains and refill stations are located on every concourse level of the Grandstand, Clubhouse, and Jockey Club Suites. On Derby Day, additional temporary hydration stations are set up in the Infield and near the Paddock Gate entry area.
Any concession stand will provide a free cup of ice water on request. You do not need to purchase anything. This applies to all kitchens and bars across every level of the venue. Ask any food service staff member.
Factory-sealed, clear plastic water bottles (unopened) are permitted through all gates. No glass containers. This is the easiest way to guarantee hydration, especially if you're spending the full day in the Infield.
Derby Day (first Saturday of May) regularly sees temperatures above 80°F. The Infield and upper Grandstand have limited shade. Alternate water and alcohol. Wear a hat and sunscreen. The #1 medical call on Derby Day is heat-related illness. If you feel dizzy, visit First Aid immediately.
Where to find medical help if you need it during your visit.
Located next to the Clubhouse nursing room. Staffed by medical professionals on all race days. Can handle minor injuries, heat exhaustion, dehydration, and allergic reactions. This is the primary First Aid location.
Near the Paddock Gate entrance. A secondary First Aid station with basic medical supplies and trained staff. Closer to the main entry points for quick access.
A First Aid trailer operates in the Infield on Kentucky Oaks and Derby days only. This location also doubles as a nursing room. EMTs patrol the Infield throughout the day. Given the Infield's party atmosphere, this station sees the highest volume of heat-related and alcohol-related calls.
For medical emergencies, contact any Churchill Downs staff member or call 502-636-4400. On major race days, EMTs and paramedics are stationed throughout the venue with roving medical carts. Louisville EMS response time to Churchill Downs is under 5 minutes.
Ben Jarvie is the founder of DunnyDash — the restroom finder for people who'd rather not gamble. A lifelong traveler, trekker, and self-described tumbleweed who has explored every corner of Australia and beyond, Ben built DunnyDash because he got tired of the three-search, one-desperate-purchase routine. After 17+ years on the road running service-based businesses, he turned that hard-won knowledge of every rest stop, stadium bathroom, and roadside block into a proper restroom finder — pulling from government open data, community contributions, and the kind of on-the-ground verification that comes from actually using the facilities. He writes about public infrastructure, accessibility, travel logistics, and the unglamorous-but-essential question of where to go when you need to go.
