    About Capital One Arena

Capital One Arena opened on December 2, 1997 as MCI Center, bringing professional sports back to downtown Washington, DC after decades in the Maryland suburbs. Built at a cost of $260 million, the arena was designed by Ellerbe Becket and is credited with catalyzing the revitalization of the Penn Quarter/Chinatown neighborhood.

The arena has been renamed multiple times — from MCI Center to Verizon Center (2006) to Capital One Arena (2017). It is currently undergoing a massive $850 million renovation that will modernize every aspect of the venue while keeping it operational. The arena has hosted the Capitals' 2018 Stanley Cup championship, NCAA tournament games, major concerts, and political events. Its location in the heart of DC, directly above the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, makes it one of the most accessible arenas in the country.
