5 public toilets in Margaret River town — but let's be honest, you're not here for the town. You're here for the 150 wineries, the world-class surf, the caves with prehistoric fossils, and the karri trees taller than apartment blocks. Finding a loo between your third Cabernet tasting and the cave tour? That's the real challenge. We've mapped what we can.

Wadandi (Wardandi) country. Margaret River's combination of world-class wine, surf, caves, and old-growth forest is genuinely unique in Australia. First vines planted in 1967 after a research paper identified the climate as similar to Bordeaux.
Dr Tom Cullity planted the first vines at Vasse Felix in 1967, after Dr John Gladstones identified the climate as ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. Within 15 years, Margaret River was producing some of Australia's finest wines.
Today: 150+ wineries producing only 3% of Australia's wine but 20% of Australia's premium wine. Cabernet Sauvignon capital. Vanya Cullen pioneered biodynamic winemaking. Leeuwin Estate hosts concerts (London Philharmonic, Ray Charles).
The Group Settlement Scheme (1921-1930) recruited thousands of British migrants to clear karri and jarrah forests for dairy farming. The reality was brutal — enormous trees felled by hand, poor soil, isolation. The suicide rate was high. Fewer than a third of settlers remained.
Those who stayed built the dairy industry. The Margaret River Dairy Company traces its origins to this era. The forests those settlers cleared are now the protected old-growth stands tourists come to see.
