American River is a tiny settlement of approximately 220 people on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It sits on Eastern Cove overlooking Pelican Lagoon — a 397-hectare aquatic reserve teeming with birdlife.
The town is named after a group of American sealers who sheltered here in 1803–04 and built the schooner “Independence” from local timber. It was one of the first European-built vessels constructed in South Australia.
Today it's a quiet fishing and holiday village, popular with birdwatchers, anglers, and people who want to escape everything — including, apparently, plumbing infrastructure.
Been to American River recently? If anything has changed — new facilities (unlikely, but we live in hope), closures, updated access — let us know.
