    Where There Are NO Toilets

This is the important bit. Most places around American River have zero facilities. Use the foreshore dunny before you go anywhere.

    American River History Trail (7.1km)

No toilets anywhere on this walk. The entire 7.1km loop has zero facilities. Use the foreshore toilet before you start — you won't get another chance until you're back.

    Pelican Lagoon

397-hectare aquatic reserve. No toilets. No bins. No facilities of any kind. Bring what you need and take it with you.

    Independence Point

No toilet. Just a lookout and the remnants of history. Plan accordingly.

    Pelican feeding area (Mercure Lodge)

No public toilet at the feeding spot itself. The Mercure Lodge may allow guests to use theirs — don't count on it.

The General Store (18 Buick Drive)

Sells fuel, bait, and groceries but does NOT have public toilet facilities.

    Cafe and Restaurant Fallbacks

Customer toilets likely — but not guaranteed. Buy something, be polite, and you'll probably be fine. This is a village of 220 people; don't take the piss (figuratively).

    Kangaroo Island Route Planning

American River sits between the island's two main towns. It's the only toilet stop on either route. Miss it and you're holding on for 30+ minutes of winding island road.

    Wildlife and Why People Come

Nobody comes to American River for the facilities. They come for the wildlife — and the quiet. Just remember: none of these wildlife spots have a toilet.

    Pelican feeding

Australian pelicans are fed every 2nd morning around 9am at the Mercure Lodge foreshore. Free to watch. No toilet at the feeding spot — use the foreshore dunny beforehand (500m walk).

    Dolphins from the wharf

Bottlenose dolphins are regularly spotted from the American River wharf, especially in the morning. The toilet is 50 metres away — convenient, for once.

    Glossy black cockatoos

Kangaroo Island has one of the last remaining populations. They feed in she-oak stands around American River. Birdwatching loops have no facilities.

    Pelican Lagoon

397-hectare aquatic reserve. Black swans breed here in December. Wading birds year-round. Beautiful — and completely devoid of any human infrastructure including toilets.

    Local Tips

American River is a 220-person village on an island. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

Use the toilet before any walk or drive

There is one dunny in town and zero between towns. Whether you're walking the History Trail, driving to Penneshaw, or heading to Pelican Lagoon — use the foreshore toilet first.

    General Store (18 Buick Drive)

Sells fuel, bait, fishing tackle, basic groceries, and ice. Does NOT have public toilets. Open limited hours — check locally.

    No ATM

There is no ATM in American River. The general store may have EFTPOS. Bring cash for the showers ($2 coins specifically) and campground fees.

    Mobile signal is patchy

Telstra has the best coverage on KI but expect dead spots on walking trails. Don't rely on Google Maps mid-walk — download offline maps before you leave the mainland.

    After dark

No street lighting to speak of. The foreshore toilet is your only 24-hour facility. Bring a torch if you're camping and need the loo at 2am.

    Fuel up here

The general store has fuel but limited hours. If it's closed, Kingscote (42km) or Penneshaw (37km) are your options. Don't assume anything is open on a Sunday.

Things to Do in American River

A blink-and-you'll-miss-it hamlet on Kangaroo Island's eastern end. What it lacks in infrastructure, it makes up for in pelicans, oysters, and absolute peace.

    Pelican Feeding

Daily pelican feeding at the wharf. Massive Australian pelicans swoop in like feathery 747s. Free to watch, unforgettable for kids.

Eastern Cove is famous for whiting, garfish, and squid. Cast from the jetty or hire a tinnie. Bring your own bait — the general store stocks basics.

Gentle coastal walk along the sheltered cove. Mangroves, wading birds, and views across to Penneshaw. About 3km return. No toilet on the trail.

    KI Oysters

Birdwatching paradise. Black swans, spoonbills, and dozens of wader species. Binoculars essential. No facilities whatsoever.

    Kayaking

The sheltered inlet is perfect for kayaking. Paddle around Eastern Cove and spot dolphins, rays, and the occasional seal. Hire from local operators (seasonal).

    Stargazing

Zero light pollution. On a clear night, the Milky Way is so vivid it looks fake. Bring a blanket, lie on the foreshore, and forget everything else exists.

    About American River

American River is a tiny settlement of approximately 220 people on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It sits on Eastern Cove overlooking Pelican Lagoon — a 397-hectare aquatic reserve teeming with birdlife.

The town is named after a group of American sealers who sheltered here in 1803–04 and built the schooner “Independence” from local timber. It was one of the first European-built vessels constructed in South Australia.

Today it's a quiet fishing and holiday village, popular with birdwatchers, anglers, and people who want to escape everything — including, apparently, plumbing infrastructure.
