The Whitsundays are a boat-access archipelago. Your toilet situation depends entirely on which island you're visiting and how you're getting there.
Composting toilet (Hill Inlet end only)
The main beach has NO toilet. One composting dunny at the far northern end near Hill Inlet lookout.
Most tour boats stop at the southern end for swimming — there's nothing there. Use the boat toilet before going ashore. If your tour visits Hill Inlet, there's a basic composting toilet. Don't rely on it.
Onboard marine toilet
All charter yachts have marine toilets (heads). Your most reliable option in the Whitsundays.
Whether it's a 2-day or week-long sail, your boat IS your toilet facility. Bareboat or crewed — all licensed vessels have heads. This is genuinely the easiest toilet situation in the islands.
Boat toilet only
Reef pontoons and snorkel spots have no land-based facilities. Use the boat.
Outer reef pontoons (like Reefworld) have onboard toilet facilities. If you're snorkelling off a beach or inlet, there's nothing on land. The boat is your only option.
Full facilities island-wide
The only Whitsunday island with permanent flush toilets, running water, and full infrastructure.
Hamilton Island is a self-contained resort town with toilets at the marina, resort pool areas, restaurants, and beaches. Day visitors arriving by ferry can use marina facilities freely.
Composting toilets at registered sites
NPWS campgrounds have basic composting toilets. No water, no lighting, BYO everything.
Island camping requires a permit from Queensland Parks. Sites at Whitehaven (south end), Tongue Bay, and Nara Inlet (Hook Island) have composting toilets. Carry all water, toilet paper, and hand sanitiser. Leave no trace.
Airlie Beach Lagoon (24hr)
The mainland base for all Whitsunday tours. Multiple public toilets along the esplanade.
Always use the Airlie Beach facilities before boarding your tour. The lagoon toilets are 24-hour, wheelchair accessible, and right next to where boats depart. Abel Point Marina and Port of Airlie also have facilities.
74 tropical islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. World-class beaches, coral reefs, sailing, and island camping — all accessible by boat from Airlie Beach.

7km of pure white silica sand — consistently rated one of the world's best beaches. Turquoise water, no development. Southern end for swimming, northern end for Hill Inlet views.
The iconic swirling sands viewpoint at the northern tip of Whitehaven Beach. Short steep walk from Tongue Bay. Best at low tide when the sand patterns are most dramatic.
Outer reef day trips to Hardy Reef and Reefworld pontoon. Inner fringing reefs around Hook Island and Border Island. World Heritage coral and marine life.
Multi-day sailing charters — bareboat or crewed. Sleep on the water, wake up in a different bay each morning. The classic Whitsunday experience. 2-3 day trips most popular.
Fringing reefs at Blue Pearl Bay (Hayman Island), Manta Ray Bay (Hook Island), and Luncheon Bay. Turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, and colourful coral gardens.
Bush camping at Whitehaven Beach (south end), Tongue Bay, and Dugong Beach. NPWS permit required. Composting toilets, no water. Pure tropical wilderness experience.
The only developed island — resort, restaurants, golf course, wildlife park, marina. Day trips or multi-night stays. Full tourist infrastructure. Airport with direct flights.
